it's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...

Oh how I love Christmas decorations!  I always have them up by the end of November, and this year I got started even earlier than normal with almost everything done before Jeff's birthday.  The only thing left was decorating the tree, which had to wait until I bought new lights as our old ones finally bit the dust.  I love how the bright led lights look on the tree.

The kids were very excited to get started on decorating.  When I put the decorations away after Christmas I always make sure to keep a kid-friendly bin...all their homemade decorations (which they so love seeing on the tree) along with other non-breakables.  They just love digging in and getting the tree started.

My tree is definately a family tree - no perfect matchy matchy tree here.  I love looking at it and remembering where each decoration came from...the star I bought when Jeff and I were in Germany, my baleek porcelain christmas tree from Mary (my mother-in-law), the little drummer boy which hung on my mother's tree when she was a child, decorations made by the kids over the years and of course my ever growing collection of Disney ornaments from our trips.

Now I just need to get some presents under there.  My closet currently looks like an episode of hoarders because it's packed full with my holiday shopping (I'm almost done, yay!).

My favourite - stockings hung on the mantle...

Happy Birthday Jeff!

In the midst of putting up all the Christmas decorations we had a birthday to celebrate.  The kids love everything about a party - making cards, picking presents, watching Daddy open the presents, and of course the cupcake finale.  He came home to a big banner we had made and three children begging for him to open their present first!

Happy Birthday Honey - hope you had a great day!!

catch-up

Well, I am behind on blogging and the pictures are piling up on my computer so here's a recap of the past 2 weeks...

Had a visit from this cutie! My sis, brother-in-law, niece along with my brother-in-law's parents (visiting from France) came for a visit and it was a lot of fun as usual. Besides how much we love to spend time with everyone, it's also a great opportunity for my kids to practice their french since Jinette and Jean-Pierre do not speak english. Leah and Jillian loved spending time with Alicia, and Kyle enjoyed playing ping-pong with Jean-Pierre and Uncle Sam!

Elves have been busy cleaning out the garage for winter, putting bikes away in the shed and most importantly getting the lights up, yay!  Now I just need to finish getting all the inside Christmas stuff done.

Procrastination is my middle name.  Which is why even though I painted and reorganized this room a year ago, I have only just now hung up artwork on the big blank wall.  I bought the picture frames oh about a week after painting the room.  I set them beside the couch until I could decide exactly what to put in them.  And they sat.  And they sat.  In fact they sat there for a whole year!  But I finally got my butt moving decided and now they hang on the wall, yay.

Kyle participated in his very first Mathletics competition.  He was one of the youngest competitors and the teachers thought this would be a great experience for him to participate to prepare for some serious competition next year.  Well wouldn't you know he came in 7th out of 45 kids in his age division (grades 5 & 6).  Way to go Kyle!

And of course no week is complete without lots art projects by my girls.  They are always ready to get busy with new projects.  Painting has been a favourite lately.

Pink girls

I was never what you would call a girly-girl...I have a lot of fond memories as a young child and most of them involve climbing trees, playing with boys and riding my big-wheel (remember those?).  I have one really great memory of visiting my friend across the street, a boy.  He answered the door and told me I was a girl and I should not be wearing jeans.  I remember telling him I could wear whatever I wanted!
Fast forward to now and I am a mother of two amazing girls.  Two strong and independent girls who are obsessed with all things girly.  They love pink and purple.  They love to wear skirts and dresses.  They love to have their nails painted and their hair done up with fancy ribbons.  They love to put on lipbalm and call it make-up and put on bracelets and necklaces.  Of course I'm not complaining because they have brought out the girl in me for sure, I even own a pink jacket now for goodness sake!  Plus all the amazing shopping that comes along with girls...Kyle's response when I bring home new clothes is 'eh - I'll wear it', whereas Jillian has squeals of joy when a new dress or skirt shows up in her closet.

And so it is no surprise my girls love (and I mean LOVE) Barbie - the dolls, the books, the movies.  As a mom I'm always looking for ways to teach my kids about the important things.  While there are many opportunities for tiny life lessons, I do find reading books and watching movies is one of the best ways to start up some of these conversations.  The reason our Barbie book and dvd collection has been growing is because I am loving the focus of these stories and our discussions about them.  The strong character traits...confidence, friendship, loyalty, problem solving skills.  All wrapped up in a pink, girly package that appeals to my girls.

I sure didn't think I would be talking about Barbie and using her latest story as a jumping off point in my conversations 6 years ago when Jillian was a baby.  In fact I'll admit I was very happy to have a little girl with a big brother and a house filled with cars, trains, puzzles and lego.  This will be great I thought to myself.  Then Jillian got older and her oh-so-very-pink-personality really started to show.  It wasn't long before dolls, art supplies and bead making kits took over our house.  So I think one of the biggest ways I've been able to encourage Jillian, and now Leah, is to embrace their interests.  We all know kids learn best when they are interested in the topic at hand.  So using these stories has been great as a jumping off point for our discussions about solving problems, being a good friend and looking beyond pretty clothes and external beauty.

I truly think embracing things that interest my kids is the best way to encourage them and help them grow.  And of course this extends beyond Barbie.  The girls have an avid interest in all things arts and crafts related so we have a designated craft area on the mainfloor which is fully stocked, and hold a family membership to an art gallery.  Jillian knows jeans and tshirts are my main wardrobe staple, but she also knows I buy her skirts and dresses because she loves them.  I hope my kids always know their choices are valid, even if they are different from other people.  In our house that means we embrace the pink!

Take a minute to visit the Barbie I Can Be website, there are some great discussion points on there and Terry Carson (a parenting coach) has some great words of advice.

fun with friends

There's no better way to spend a sunny Saturday afternoon than with a bunch of friends.  The kids and I met up with another family for some lunch and park fun...playground, tag, rolling down hills.  We ended the afternoon with a trip to Starbucks for hot chocolate (lattes for the moms) and some book browsing at Chapters.  Kids getting lots of fresh air and burning off energy, moms getting a chance to talk and catch up...that's the life!

Halloween 2011

We started out the evening with pumpkin decorating.  The girls were right into scooping out the pumpkins...Kyle on the other hands HATES the pumpkin guts.  After carving out 2 pumpkins, and drawing on 3 (yeah, I was feeling a little lazy) we grabbed a quick dinner and got ready for the main event.

Our pumpkins...as you can see my Disney obsession even comes out a Halloween.

Kyle was off and started so fast I didn't even get a picture of him outside but I did grab one of him before school.  My girls of course are always ready to pose for a picture!

Kyle as everyone's favourite plumber Mario.

Jillian as Rapunzel complete with pet Pascal on her shoulder.  She wanted authentic looking hair just like Rapunzel from the movie Tangled...I bought some yarn, flowers and ribbon and voila!

And Leah as the Happy Witch

Jeff took Kyle and Jillian out with some other friends, while Leah and I enjoyed a slower 3 year old pace with her best friend.

The loot was extreme as always...honestly, it's ridiculous how much candy and chocolate we end up with at the end of the night.  And it's all good stuff, not like when we were kids and getting a brand name chocolate bar was like getting gold!

Now comes the battle of willpower for me with all this candy and chocolate in the house!
