one on one time

Jillian is my middle kid.  This may or may not be the reason she CRAVES one and one time.  It's not always easy, she does get the short end of the stick in some ways.  Leah naturally gets a lot of time alone with me because we are together a few days each week either hanging out at home or running errands and doing things like storytime at the library.  Kyle is up later than the girls which gives him an hour or so each night without the girls (he just doesn't need as much sleep as they do...in fact my crazy son has never needed as much sleep as most kids).  Plus he's older so we're able to do different things with Kyle, like watching the Back to the Future trilogy which we did recently in the late evenings after the girls were tucked into bed.  On the flip side one could say Jillian gets the best of both worlds...when there's a big kid thing she gets to do it along with Kyle while Leah is told she's too small, and when it's a girl or little kid thing Kyle is the one who is left out (although if it's a girly thing he's happy to be on his own instead of participating).

playing backgammon...Jillian won this game!

There is no natural alone time with Jillian, which means I need to make an effort to do it more often.  Right now I make sure Jillian has playtime with her friends without a little tagalong sister and we do reading together each night before bed.  But what I really want to do is make sure we get out more and do things together.  She just loves going out with Jeff or me without any siblings.  Today Leah was invited to a friend's house for the afternoon so we left the boys at home to play video games, dropped Leah off at Emily's house for a playdate, then Jillian and I hit the mall.  We wandered around stores Jillian likes, she got a new pair of shorts for gymnastics from her favourite store and we had a snack.  It wasn't a long trip or anything very exciting but Jillian didn't mind, she just loved that we were walking around together and chatting.

I recently heard a great saying...kids spell love T-I-M-E.  It is so true.

Family fun movie night

It was a very nice low-key Family Day weekend for us and we topped it off with family fun movie night.
The kids all cozy with their stuffies while we watched Hotel Transylvania

Happy Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day!

"You're the sweetest, from Leah"
(on a side note: I love pinterest)
"I'll owl-ways be your friend, from Jillian"
(another pinterest idea)
No valentine's for Kyle's class, he's outgrown them *sniff sniff*.  At least I have a few more years of cutesy kid fun with the girls!

menu planning

With our insane somewhat busy activity schedule on week nights we've been eating a lot of convenience food (let's just say PC blue menu lasagna & pre-cooked meatballs are my best friends).  I made stir-fry for dinner tonight and decided we needed to do a menu plan for the week.  I left it up to hubby and kids...this is the result.

I added in the squash ravioli because I have it in the fridge already and I can't eat a whole plate of high fat macaroni and cheese (alright, I *could* eat a whole plateful but in my quest to eat healthier I won't).  I also added the milkshakes on Friday night because heck, it's Friday and milkshakes go with cheeseburgers!  Note the term "real" in front of the burgers because Kyle is griping about the veggie burgers I've been serving the family for the past few months.  I'll stick to veggie for myself but make some real ones for the rest of the family who are all carnivores (although I will be sneaking in some pureed veggies...shhhhh).

I get to pick for Saturday night and haven't decided yet but I'm leaning towards maple glazed salmon with roasted potatoes and veggies on the side.  Yes, I eat seafood, I'm a bad vegetarian.  I looked it up once and apparently there is a term for those of us who eat eggs, dairy & seafood but avoid other meat products, if there's a name for it then I can't be the only one.

snow day!

In our school board they often cancel the school buses during bad weather, but the schools remain open.  Normally I'm the mean Mom who says "schools are open" and drives my kids to school.  But when we woke up on Friday morning to a big dumping of white stuff I decided it was time for my kids to experience a true snow day and get the day off from school.
a lot of snow and still coming down

Kyle's snowday activity of choice, opening up this puzzle to get started.  He and I have made a dent in putting it together but it will be a weekend long activity

making muffins...chocolate chip oatmeal muffins to go with their hot chocolate to warm them up after all that snow play

hot chocolate with frothed milk, marshmallows and chocolate syrup
(made at home means a fraction of the cost compared to the fancy coffee store version!)

princess

Leah loves her book about the newest Disney princess, Sofia the First.  She hasn't seen the movie or tv shows yet but it comes out on DVD soon.  She was happy to pose with a picture of Sofia at Chapters.
Real princesses wear boots!

indoor beach

I found this idea on pinterest and it seemed like the perfect PA day activity.  This homemade moonsand provided hours of enjoyment for the girls. Very easy to make...8 cups of flour to 1 cup of baby oil (I made approximately 4 batches in this tub).
