Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is Disney's very own Bahamian island.  This truly is paradise...beautiful white sandy beaches, lush greenery all around and torquoise blue water.  And of course all the amenities of a Disney vacation...yummy BBQ lunch, fresh cut island fruit, plenty of chairs and umbrellas for everyone, a covered splash pad area for the kids and of course that amazing Disney service.

We started out this day early because Kyle, Jillian and Jeff had tickets to feed and snorkel with stingrays!  Disney has a fenced area full of stingrays who are very well fed and have trimmed barbs.  The adventure started with an information session all about stingrays by Eileen, the very lucky person who lives on Castaway Cay year round to train and look after the stingrays.  You can tell Disney really does take care with these animals.  Leah and I were able to watch from the beach while Jeff, Kyle and Jillian were in the water.

Both of the kids were a bit freaked out a first with the fish and stingrays swimming around their feet.  Jillian even ended up with a small bite from a fish.  Eileen offered to let them stand by the shore and pet a few stingrays who come right up to the shallow water.  It was fascinating to watch how well trained they are...one goes through a tunnel, another follows a rope placed on the ocean bottom in the shape of an S...I had no idea stingrays could be trained!

Eventually both Kyle and Jillian were willing to go out into the deeper water (with help from Daddy), to snorkel and see these beautiful creatures swim all around.  I tried to convince Jeff it is only fair we go back at some point once Leah is 5 years old so she can have a turn (he says no...I'll have to keep working on it).

The rest of the day was spent playing in the sand, swimming in the warm water, playing in the splash pad, playing games in the shade, exploring the island and just generally having the best time ever on this beautiful island.
We had beautiful weather all day until about 3:30 when the rain started and it was time to get back onto the Magic.  It was time to get dressed for dinner and enjoy a little pre-dinner ice cream (gotta love being on vacation and having constant access to an ice cream machine!)

Goodbye Castaway Cay
